Big Brother 27: A Clue About this Season’s Theme Just Dropped

Big Brother 27 is drawing closer with each passing day, with its start date set for Thursday, July 10, and the excitement is also building.

As is often the case in past seasons, each day gives new clues and insights about what the season’s theme will be, or how a massive twist may impact the game. Now that I’ve seen a few clues, I feel confident in guessing this theme, and I’m not sure the last time I’ve felt this good about my hypothesis.

A week after Julie Chen Moonves dropped an intriguing photo, the hostess is in another interesting photo posted by EW that is worth talking about. Take that, and mix it with her latest comments on BB 27, and suddenly those strange commercials we’ve seen on television don’t seem so weird anymore.

EW posted an exclusive photo of Julie Chen Moonves standing in front of a bunch of skeleton keys. House keys have long been a part of Big Brother branding, so it feels important to note these keys look markedly different than the ones we’re used to seeing. Another hint that the keys aren’t just an aesthetic choice is the quote the hostess gave alongside it.

Big Brother has been locking people in a house for nearly 25 years. Every season has a new theme or twist, some notable ones being last season’s AI Arena, Season 8’s Rivals, or Season 14’s coaches. Contestants compete for power and manipulate their way through the season. With last season being one of the best in a long time, Season 27 has a lot to live up to.

Keys are nothing new in Big Brother, but these are not like regular houseguest keys. The keys in the promo photo are vintage-looking, possibly for an old chest or door. On the official Big Brother TikTok account, the image has a backing track with the Season 2 opening song. With the old keys and a reference to an early season, some fans believe that Big Brother 27 is going to have returning cast members. Although Season 22 was an All-Star season, this would not be the first time that Big Brother has brought back previous houseguests, often with a new cast.

The old keys are not the only reason fans believe that there will be returning houseguests. Big Brother has always been a sister, or well, a brother, to another CBS reality show, Survivor. Survivor has been grabbing headlines with the star-studded returning cast for Season 50 in celebration of their 25th anniversary.

Big Brother is also turning 25 this year and may celebrate with fan-favorite houseguests as well. However, there are two pieces of evidence that this may not be the case. The first is that while Survivor has been promoting its returning cast a year in advance, Big Brother has barely started promoting Season 27. CBS has also previously stated that there would be a brand-new cast of houseguests, which seems to imply that there are no returning contestants.
